Mexico City feeds you brilliantly for less than almost any capital of its size — if you stop eating where hotel concierges point. We spent a week eating like people who live in Roma Norte, Juárez, and a stretch of Coyoacán, with one deliberate splurge in Polanco.

## The tourist-table problem

Menus translated into five languages near the Zócalo are priced for jet lag. The food can be fine; the value rarely is. Two blocks off the square, fondas with daily comida corrida still serve soup, rice, a main, and aguas frescas for the price of a single cocktail downtown.

## Markets first

La Merced overwhelms; smaller markets teach better. We started mornings at neighbourhood tianguis for fruit and gorditas, then planned one sit-down comida as the day’s anchor. Dinner became tacos al pastor counted in pesos, not courses.

## What budget still buys

Excellent coffee, fresh juice, and the occasional tasting menu if you book lunch seatings. We treated fine dining as a midday event — lower prices, fuller attention — and kept evenings casual.

## Drinks and discipline

Mezcal bars add up faster than tacos. We set a two-drink ceiling and drank aguas frescas with lunch. The city stays affordable when beverages stop being the main character.

We kept a running list of stands recommended by people who lived in the neighbourhoods we slept in — not by ranking apps that optimise for photos. Three taco stands and one fonda can define a week better than thirty trending pins.

Altitude and spice both sneak up on you. We drank more water than mezcal, and we learned which salsa bowls were decorative. Breakfast was often eggs and beans somewhere fluorescent and perfect.

Polanco’s splurge lunch was booked weeks out and still cheaper than the equivalent dinner. We walked it off in Chapultepec afterward instead of Ubering back to the hotel in defeat.

Budget eating here is not martyrdom. It is aligning with how the city already feeds millions of people who are not on holiday.

CDMX rewards curiosity over coupons. Follow the lunch rush, ask for the plate of the day, and let tourist traps advertise themselves with laminated photos. Vegetarian and meat-heavy plates both work; the failure mode is nostalgia pricing near attractions.

We tipped fairly and regularly. Budget travel that stiffs service is just extraction with better shoes. The city is generous; reciprocity is part of eating well.

None of this is secret. It is simply the difference between travelling as a consumer of highlights and travelling as a temporary resident with a budget. Stretch exists to document the second kind with enough detail to reuse.
