Morning markets are where cities tell the truth before tour buses arrive. We chased them in Marrakech and on Istanbul’s European side, half-awake and caffeinated.

Marrakech before the heat

The medina’s edges open earlier than Jemaa el-Fna’s theatre. We bought fruit, watched butchers work, and ate msemen from a stall that did not bother with laminated menus. By 10 a.m. the light flattened and the sales pitch thickened.

Istanbul’s neighbourhood mornings

Kadıköy’s market rewards ferries timed for opening. Olives, cheese, and simit for breakfast cost less than hotel buffets and tasted like a city waking up. We avoided the most photographed fish sandwiches until we had earned hunger elsewhere.

How to behave

Ask prices, smile, step aside for people who are shopping for dinner not content. Cameras after purchases, not before.

What we bought to take home

Spices in sealed bags, a small tin of tea, nothing fragile. Markets are for breakfast first, souvenirs second. If a stall feels like theatre, keep walking. The best ones are busy with baskets, not cameras.

In Marrakech we learned the difference between a market that feeds a neighbourhood and a lane that performs shopping. Both exist within a short walk. Your alarm should be for the first kind.

Istanbul’s ferry itself is part of the meal: tea in a tulip glass, city sliding by, appetite building. Arriving hungry is strategy.

We never filmed vendors without buying. That rule kept our mornings from becoming extraction. It also led to better directions to the next stall.

Go twice to the same market if you can. The second morning you stop seeing colour and start seeing patterns — who sells out first, which bread is worth the queue.

Six stalls across two countries taught the same lesson: early is not virtuous — it is simply when the good stuff still exists.

Wear shoes you can stand in. Markets are vertical work for vendors and horizontal work for visitors. Comfort is respect.

None of this is secret. It is simply the difference between travelling as a consumer of highlights and travelling as a temporary resident with a budget. Stretch exists to document the second kind with enough detail to reuse.
