We took a regional train with no reserved seats and a bag of peaches. The Alps faded into vineyards; stations passed like chapter titles.

## Why not the fastest train

High-speed is efficient. Regional is narrative. We paid less and watched laundry lines and river bends instead of tunnels.

## A small rule

Buy tickets that match the train you board. Regional systems are fair and unforgiving. We validated where required and sat where the light fell across the seat.

Station bakeries are the correct catering. A paper bag of focaccia travels better than a rushed platform espresso swallowed standing up — though we did that too.

If you only take one slow rail day in a trip of connections, make it this kind: no meetings, no museum deadlines, just the window and a willingness to arrive.

Get off once for a town square coffee if the timetable allows — then get back on. Northern Italy by rail is not a hack. It is a reminder that moving can be the day.

Charge your phone before you board, then try not to look at it. The window is the content. Notifications can wait for the next station Wi-Fi.
