- Description: How we decide between points and cash for long-haul flights without turning travel into a spreadsheet religion.

Points are a tool, not a personality. We book long-haul with a simple test: cents per point versus cash fare, plus the cost of rigidity.

## When points win

Saver awards on routes we already planned, especially premium cabin repositioning that cash prices punish. We keep one flexible credit card and one airline ecosystem — more than that becomes unpaid labour.

## When cash wins

Complicated multi-city tickets, short booking windows, and routes where award inventory is theatre. Paying cash and keeping the points for a clearer redemption is not failure.

- Set a floor value (we use \~1.5¢ on economy, higher on premium)
- Refuse award bookings that require heroic positioning flights
- Track transfer bonuses, not everyday ratios

If the redemption needs a paragraph to justify, buy the ticket and go.

## The hybrid

Cash outbound, points return — or the reverse — when calendars disagree. We stop optimising once the trip is funded.

## Review once a year

We keep a one-page note of transfer partners and rough sweet spots, then close the browser. Research without a trip date is how evenings disappear.

Partner airlines complicate award charts. We read the fine print on fuel surcharges before celebrating a low mileage number that becomes a cash surprise at checkout.

Family travel changes the math: four award seats rarely appear together. Sometimes cash for the group and points for a future solo hop is the adult choice.

The goal is a ticket you are glad to use, not a redemption you are proud to screenshot. Pride does not stretch a layover that should not exist.

We review the system once a year, not once a week. Obsession is its own fee. Long-haul should feel like departure, not like accounting.

Children’s tickets, pet fees, and seat selection can wreck an award that looked perfect at 35,000 miles. Price the whole door-to-door cost before transferring points irreversibly.

None of this is secret. It is simply the difference between travelling as a consumer of highlights and travelling as a temporary resident with a budget. Stretch exists to document the second kind with enough detail to reuse.

#### Our floor values (update yearly)

Economy \~1.5¢ per point. Premium cabin higher when cash fares are punitive. Never transfer without a seat available.
