Santorini is expensive and crowded for reasons that are partly fair. The caldera is real. The cruise schedule is also real. We planned around tender arrivals the way sailors plan around tides.
Where the hours go wrong
Late morning to mid-afternoon funnels ship passengers into Oia and Fira. Prices rise; patience falls. We slept in a quieter cliff village, walked early, and treated noon as beach or nap time inland.
The island does not get worse at noon. The queue does.
Budget moves that still feel like Santorini

Bus passes beat endless taxis. Bakeries beat hotel breakfasts. One sunset drink with a view is enough; the second is a surcharge on memory.
When to go
Late May and late September held swimming weather with softer rates. August is a different product entirely.
Ferries have a pulse too
Lodging on the caldera edge costs a premium that is sometimes worth it for the first night and rarely for the fourth. We mixed one view night with quieter stays inland where breakfast was bread and tomatoes, not a performance.
Beaches on the island are not the Caribbean fantasy brochure. Go for the swim and the volcanic oddity, not for lounge-chair status. Bring water; markups at sunbeds are part of the landscape.
Wine tasting can be done without a private driver if you plan bus schedules like a local commute. Spitting is allowed; finishing every glass is how budgets sink with the sun.
Santorini will always be busy. The craft is choosing hours when the island feels like a place people live, not a deck tourists visit.
Ferry arrivals from other islands create their own rush. We checked port boards the way others check nightlife lists. You cannot remove cruise ships from Santorini. You can refuse to stand where they stand at the hour they stand there.
Photographers already know the blue-dome angles. We shot less and looked more. The caldera does not need your widest lens to be true.
None of this is secret. It is simply the difference between travelling as a consumer of highlights and travelling as a temporary resident with a budget. Stretch exists to document the second kind with enough detail to reuse.
